Twitterverse exploded after South by Southwest (SXSW) announced their 2011 comedy line-up. It features a stellar list of well-known and up-and-coming comedians, but here’s a head-scratcher: out of 31 comedians performing only one female was announced.

Needless to say frustrated fans and comedians alike brought all their annoyance to Twitter.

“Jesus. SXSW Comedy booked one female this year. One.” tweeted Sara Benincasa.

“My first SXSW in Austin is mired by sexism!” tweeted upset fan @EmmaKat

In a released statement, the officials indicated that the list wasn’t finalized yet and was subject to change.

“Unfortunately, we had just three female comedians apply in our open process this year. We’d love to see that number increase every year. That said, we did reach out to several who just couldn’t make it work due to scheduling,” SXSW commented.

The crowds were not satisfied with such a dubious statement and demanded a better explanation. The co-creator and comedian Lizz Winstead pointed out how many great female comedians we have and would like to see more on stages everywhere, not excluding the current SXSW event.

South By Southwest is a set of music, film and comedy festivals and conferences held in Austin, TX every spring. It harbors over 2000 performers playing in 90 different venues around downtown Austin over four days.
